GST Invoice Format
A GST invoice format is the set of mandatory fields — GSTIN, invoice number, SAC/HSN code, tax breakup, and more — that a tax invoice must include to be valid under Indian GST law.
A GST-compliant invoice must include specific fields: your GSTIN and the recipient’s GSTIN (if registered), a unique consecutive invoice number, invoice date, description of services with the relevant SAC code, taxable value, applicable GST rate, and the tax broken down into CGST/SGST or IGST as appropriate.
Missing or incorrect fields — a common example being an incorrect CGST/SGST vs. IGST split for an inter-state client — can cause problems both for your own GST return filing and for your client’s ability to claim input tax credit.
Using invoicing software that enforces the correct format automatically (rather than a manually edited Word or Excel template) significantly reduces the chance of a non-compliant invoice going out.
